Egoboo - A Monthly Diary
Egoboo is an open source dungeon crawler based on the roguelike genre. It features randomly generated maps, 8 player character classes and the ability to play together in multiplayer.
The game is cross-platform (Windows, Linux and Mac) with a fully integrated map editor and support for up to 4 players via hotseat. It is freeware and released under GPLv3 license.
Despite its age, Egoboo is still an active project and the team plans to continue to improve it. The first step in this direction is to bring the game up to date in terms of coding and data quality.
This means, porting to recent C++ compilers under Linux, Windows and Mac. The code-base has been simplified by removing a lot of legacy code and rendering code has been optimized so that it can run on any Intel HD graphics card.
It also introduces a new perk system called Stealth, a charge bar for spells and major improvements to the physics system that makes the game more stable when collisions with objects or walls occur.
The team will also continue to work on the underlying technology, implementing an improved build system and updating external dependencies. The team feels that it is important to keep the underlying technology as simple as possible without losing the unique spirit of Egoboo.
As a result, the team decided to start a monthly development diary series on GitHub in which they will keep you informed about the course and progress of their work on the game. We hope that you will find these posts interesting and if so, you will consider contributing to Egoboo in some way.
